Brigitte’s Pick: Funnies

January 31, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog has to admit that when it comes to funnies, Brigitte can pick em! Read on and chuckle.

I like Chuck Norris and the ladies shouting encouragement and abuse at the cooking show in particular. But all will raise a smile (or raise your blood pressure)

Hugh Paxton’s Blog viewed this idea with fear! Scrabble! International Scrabble! I’m a one point man. My Scrabble is full of utterly useless letters.

But this idea is intriguing. I’ll give it a shot.

Then I’ll lose.

O.K….the game is on!! Travel Scrabble. Keep it going!!!

Change one letter of the bottom word posted and let’s see who gets stuck and can’t continue!

Rules: You cannot add letters. You can only use English. You can only change one letter.
Send it back to the person that sent it to you, plus new people.

Add your entry to the bottom after you hit forward. Don’t forget: send it back to the person that sent it to you, plus 10 new people.

To make it even more interesting, include your location and the date to see how far this goes and how long it’s been out.

Maybe it will come back to you in a week or a month or a year! Thai Days: Beloved daughter Annabel meets an elephant

January 31, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog really likes elephants. So does my daughter. And elephants seem to like us. It’s how the world should be!

Cheers from Bangkok! Hugh

A bit of Persian poetry. Exquisite.

January 31, 2013

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit,
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

But helpless pieces in the game He plays,
Upon this chequer-board of Nights and Days,
He hither and thither moves, and checks… and slays,
Then one by one, back in the Closet lays.

And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before
The Tavern shouted— “Open then the Door!
You know how little time we have to stay,
And once departed, may return no more.”

A Book of Verses underneath the Bough,
A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou,
Beside me singing in the Wilderness,
And oh, Wilderness is Paradise enow.

Myself when young did eagerly frequent
Doctor and Saint, and heard great Argument
About it and about: but evermore
Came out of the same Door as in I went.

With them the Seed of Wisdom did I sow,
And with my own hand labour’d it to grow:
And this was all the Harvest that I reap’d—
“I came like Water, and like Wind I go.”

Into this Universe, and why not knowing,
Nor whence, like Water willy-nilly flowing:
And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,
I know not whither, willy-nilly blowing.

And that inverted Bowl we call The Sky,
Whereunder crawling coop’t we live and die,
Lift not thy hands to It for help—for It
Rolls impotently on as Thou or I.

Good Deed of the Day: First African to join the ‘Giving Pledge’

January 31, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog applauds the decision by Patrice Motsepe, a South African mining billionaire, to give half of his riches to charity, matching similar pledges from Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

Patrice is the first African to display such generosity.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all the political leaders in Africa, who have plundered their countries for personal gain leaving millions in  poverty and misery, followed suit?

Yes. It would be nice!

And it’s about as likely as  peace in the DRC.

But congratulations, Patrice! You’ve done the right thing.

My wife wins an award for the following story

January 30, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog always likes winning awards. And I like seeing other people winning awards. Here’s a story written by my wife that has just won an award. There wasn’t any money attached to the award. And there wasn’t even a cup. But an award is an award. And I love that evil glint in the horse’s eye!

Wild Open Eye: Lots of Sheep!

January 29, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s blog is reminded of that brainless Cornish pub song “Some men go for women, some men go for boys, but my love wears a woolly coat and makes a baaing noise!”

Here’s all the woolly coats certain men might love.

Nice panorama photo from Andy Luck’s Wild open Eye blog!

Thanks, Andy ! Cheers from Hugh and crew in Bangkok!

Launch of INTERPOL’s Project SCALE, an INTERPOL initiative to detect, suppress and combat fisheries crime.

January 29, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog received this and is glad INTERPOL is getting its act together regarding the ruthless rape of marine resources and the tragedy of the commons. One of the strangest angles when it comes to looting and depleting fish stocks is the helpful role played by Somali pirates. They keep the foreign, predatory fleets away. I’m not giving these guys a thumbs up but some pirates might just have a silver lining.

Dear Colleagues,

With the month of February upon us, our team would like to update you on the progress of the 1st INTERPOL International Fisheries Enforcement Conference and Fisheries Crime Working Group Meeting which will be held from 26 to 28 February 2013 at the INTERPOL General Secretariat in Lyon, France. At present, around 55 Member Countries have confirmed their participation as well as over 30 International Organizations and experts in the field of fisheries. Ministers from Liberia, Norway, Sierra Leone, Spain and Togo will be making statements in addition to Chiefs of International Organizations.

These events will mark the launch of INTERPOL’s Project SCALE, a cornerstone in the global fight against fisheries crime and related illegal activities. By bringing together high-level representatives from fisheries compliance agencies, coast guard and police, we aim to create a common understanding, develop a coordinated, global approach to fisheries crime, and strengthen cooperation and communication between national agencies and international organizations in the field of fisheries.

We highly recommend that those government and law enforcement officials in the field of fisheries interested in attending these events contact their National Central Bureau. For those experts in fisheries issues from international organizations, we look forward to hearing from you at environmentalcrime. Please visit our website for further information about logistics, panelists and topics of discussion:

Take a look at the map to see whether your country will be represented!

Best regards / Cordialement / Atentamente / مع التحية

Part two of the Leonie’s View and Brigitte’s Pick Double Whammy: Why Wimps Go South – Living in Botswana – (very much like Windhoek at the moment)

January 29, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog hopes you pressed Leonie’s snowman and saw the reasons some wimps head south. Here’s Brigitte’s take on why some wimps might go back north again. Be advised there is a bit of bad language and the writer’s cat explodes. Not for children.

Sitting comfortably? Then he’ll begin.

August 1

Just got transferred with work from London, UK to our new home in the Phakalane Golf Estate, Gaborone.
Now this is a town that knows how to live!
Beautiful, sunny days and warm, balmy evenings.
I watched the sunset from a deckchair by our pool yesterday.
It was beautiful.
I’ve finally found my new home.
I love it here.

September 1
Really heating up now.
It got to 31 today.
No problem though.
Living in air-conditioned home, driving air-conditioned car.
What a pleasure to see the sun every day like this.
I’m turning into a sun-worshipper – no blasted rain like back in London !!

September 15
Had the back yard landscaped with tropical plants today.
Lots of palms and rocks.
No more mowing lawns for me!
Another scorcher today, but I love it here.
It’s Paradise !

October 1
The temperature hasn’t been below 35 all week.
How do people get used to this kind of heat?
At least today it’s windy though.
Keeps the flies off a bit.
Acclimatizing is taking longer than we expected.

October 15
Fell asleep by the pool yesterday.
Got third degree burns over 60% of my body.
Missed three days off work.
What a dumb thing to do..
Got to respect the old sun in a climate like this!

October 20
Didn’t notice Kitty (our cat) sneaking into the car before I left for work this morning.
By the time I got back to the car after work, Kitty had died and swollen up
to the size of a shopping bag and stuck to the upholstery.
The car now smells like Whiskas and cat poo.
I’ve learned my lesson though: no more pets in this heat.

October 25
This wind feels like a giant f?..g blow dryer.
And it’s hot as hell!
The home air conditioner is on the blink and the repair man charged P1000
just to drive over and tell me he needs to order parts from f?..g Joburg

October 30
The temperature’s up around 40 and the parts still haven’t arrived for the f?..g air conditioner.
House is an oven so we’ve all been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now.
Bloody P5,000,000 house and we can’t even go inside.
Why the hell did I ever come here?

November 4
Finally got the f?..g air-conditioner fixed. It cost P10,000 and gets the temperature down to around 35 degrees.Stupid repairman.
F?..g thief.

November 8
If one more smart mouth says ‘Hot enough for you today?’
I’m going to f?..g throttle him.
By the time I get to work, the car radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet and I smell like baked cat.
F?..g place is the end of the Earth.

November 9
Tried to run some errands after work, wore shorts, and sat on the black leather upholstery in my car.
I thought my ass was on fire.
I lost 2 layers of flesh, all the hair on the backs of my legs and
Now the car smells like burnt hair, fried ass and baked cat.

November 10
The Weather report might as well be a recording..
Hot and sunny.
Hot and sunny, Hot and f?..g sunny.
It never changes!
It’s been too hot to do anything for 2 months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.

November 15
Doesn’t it ever rain in this damn place?
Water restrictions are next, so my P20,000 worth of palms might just dry up and blow into the pool.
The only things that thrive in this hell-hole are the fg flies.
You don’t dare open your mouth for fear of swallowing half a dozen !

November 20
Welcome to HELL!
It got to 44 degrees today.
Now the air conditioner is gone in my car.
The repair man came to fix it and said, ‘Hot enough for you today?’
I wanted to shove the car up his ass.
Anyway, had to spend the P30,000 mortgage payment to bail me out of jail for assaulting the stupid prick.
F?..g Botswana!
What kind of sick, demented idiot would want to live here!

December 1
WHAT!!!! The FIRST day of Summer????

No wonder so many people living in Botswana have holiday homes in Hermanus!

Leonie’s View and Brigitte’s Pick: A Double Whammy: Post one – Why wimps go south …

January 29, 2013

Hugh Paxton’s Blog presents two received posts. The first, from Leonie deals with reasons for southern migration. They’re pretty compelling reasons! My next post will deal with why wimps might want to head north. That’s from Brigitte. Again a convincing argument for packing suitcases and running for the airport. Read on, press the snowman. Cheers! Hugh

BLOG ED NOTE: If you click on the snowman and he co-operates you will see a ghastly series of photos of snowbound vehicles, people falling over on ice etc. If the snowman doesn’t co-operate (and he doesn’t always) try to imagine it.
