Thai Days: Beer is off in Brunei, floggings and stoning back on! The Sharia Sultan!

Brunei has broken new boundaries! Today, as the world either celebrates or ignores Labour Day, the sultan (one of the wealthiest men alive who hasn’t labored in his life) has introduced Sharia law. This makes tiny, oil-rich Brunei the first country in Asia to make this great leap backwards.

The motives for this decision remain at best a bit unexplained. At worst completely incomprehensible.

“With faith and gratitude to Allah the almighty, I declare that tomorrow, Thursday May 1, 2014 will see the enforcement of sharia law phase one, to be followed by the other phases,” the absolute monarch (67 years old, worth according to a Forbes assessment three years ago at USD 20 billion) declared yesterday.

“Theory states that Allah’s law is cruel and unfair but Allah himself has said that his law is indeed fair.”

The sultan who has a vast fleet of fancy foreign cars and lots of palaces with gold leaf instead of wall paper has described Islam as a “firewall” against globalization.

Stoning to death, dismemberment, flogging are all part of the sharia package.

Perhaps the sultan will start with his younger brother, Jefri, who owned a luxury yacht called ‘Tits’, maintained a fleet of young women and is accused of embezzling USD 15 billion during his tenure as finance minister in the 1990s. I reckon that rates a bit of sharia stoning, lopping off limbs and flogging. Or perhaps the sultan will start with himself. You don’t get to amass USD 20 billion without cutting a few corners, ignoring firewalls and indulging in a bit of globalisation.

We must wait and see what the sharia sultan sees when he looks into his mirror and sees what looks back at him.

I can’t visualise him ordering himself to be stoned to death and judged for his wrongdoings by an Islamic court of his own making.

But for the time being don’t go to Brunei for the beer!

Better yet don’t go to Brunei.

Come to Thailand instead!

Much more enlightened. And a lot more fun!

Cheers from Bangkok!
